Estimated death count at Parkland mass shooting: At least 17 killed and now we know weapon

UPDATE: Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel confirmed 17 killed in the shooting.

Israel also said an “extremely powerful rifle” was used in the shooting. News 7 reports that the suspect had been expelled from the school for disciplinary reasons.

Nicolas de Jesus Cruz is the prime suspect in a mass shooting at a Parkland, Florida high school, which has now reportedly killed 15 people.

CNN reported earlier that 16 were killed in the shooting. It was reported prior that two people were confirmed killed.

ABC News’ report cites two law enforcement officials as the source of the information. This information came after Florida Senator Bill Nelson reported that “many” people were killed in the shooting.

The FBI and ATF are in South Florida assisting with the investigation. Cruz was seen in a hospital gown being escorted by law enforcement officials into a secure facility.

CNN is reporting that an AR-15 type weapon was seized at the crime scene.

This is breaking news… more information will be provided as forthcoming.
