Where does the buck stop?
Rep. Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, is confident the American people will ensure that justice is served as far as the Justice Department and the FBI allegedly being weaponized to the benefit of one candidate over another.
Appearing on Fox News on Sunday, the California Republican said that Congress is limited in what it can do.
Host Maria Bartiromo suggested “there are more felonies that you can point to,” before asking Nunes “who will we see get prosecuted as a result of this massive abuse of power?”
The lawmaker wasted little time throwing Attorney General Jeff Sessions under the bus, saying that the legislative branch’s role is to provide oversight.
“We can investigate them and at the end of the day, we can make criminal referrals, but criminal referrals only,” Nunes said. “We don’t have people that can go out and arrest people and bring them down to the Capitol and hold them in the bowels of the Capitol.”
“All we can do is make criminal referrals,” he added. “So if the DOJ and FBI are not going to prosecute what seemed to be very clear cases, like with Christopher Steele lying to them, or if they’re not going to investigate clear felonies like the leak of very highly sensitive classified information in terms of phone calls that were intercepted, if they’re not going to go after those, at some point the bucks going to have to stop with someone.”
Someone like Sessions, who heads up the Justice Department.
“We will continue our investigation,” Nunes said, “but I think ultimately it will be the American people who’ll put the pressure not only on Congress, but the other branches of government to make sure that justice is served.”
Bartiromo pointed out that Nunes, who comes from a prominent farming family, is being attacked by the left which is also going after the farming community as a whole.
“There’s been a war on people who actually build things, grow things, work with their hands,” the congressman replied, before saying Democrats and their media allies, who “don’t have a clue” how this country works, want to hide the truth from the American people.
“They don’t want the American people to know that the DOJ and FBI use political dirt from one campaign, paid for by the Democrats, to go and spy on the Trump campaign,” he charged.
