Comedian Dave Chappelle took on the recent wave of sexual harassment allegations in Hollywood in his new Netflix comedy special that aired on New Year’s Eve, but he may have crossed the line with his remarks about Anthony Rapp, who claimed actor Kevin Spacey molested him when he was 14-years-old.
Calling Los Angeles “the world capital of rape and d*ck breath,” Chappelle effectively said that it was OK that Spacey sexually abused a minor because Rapp grew up to be gay.
“I mean it is really bad out here. Kevin Spacey’s out here grabbing men by the p*ssy!” the comedian said. “I didn’t even know that was possible!”
“I’ve been to a lot of parties in my day. Never been to a good one that had 14-year-old boys in it,” Chappelle said, according to the Daily Beast.
He then suggested a 14-year-old being sexually assaulted wasn’t that serious because Rapp “grew up to be gay anyway.”
“Kevin Spacey sniffed that sh** out like a truffle pig,” Chappelle added, before implying that Rapp may have set Spacey up.
“And not to victim-blame, but it seems like the kind of situation that a gay 14-year-old kid would get himself into,” he said.
Seemingly aware that he may have gone too far, Chappelle sought to clarify his stance, but failed in the process when it turned out he was just setting up his next joke.
“All joking aside, Kevin Spacey shouldn’t have done that shit to that kid,” he said. “He was 14 years old and forced to carry a grown man’s secret for 30 years. … The saddest part is, if he had been able to carry that secret for another six months, I’d get to know how ‘House of Cards’ ends.”
Chappelle went on at length about fellow comedian Louis C.K., saying the woman who claimed he masturbated while on a phone call with her in 2003 has a “brittle-ass spirit” for being bothered by this.
“You don’t know how to hang up a phone?” he said.
Further downplaying sexual abuse in the entertainment industry, Chappelle made a snide comment about sexual predator Harvey Weinstein’s looks.
“Yeah, he rapes. I’m not sure this f*cker has a choice,” Chappelle joked. “If it was Brad Pitt doing that shit, you wouldn’t have heard a peep.”
