Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz uttered the words millions of Americans want to say to special counsel Robert Mueller: Put up or shut up.
“It’s time for Bob Mueller to put up or shut up. If there’s evidence of collusion, let’s see it!” Gaetz told Fox News. “If there’s not, let’s move on as a country.”
Gaetz, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, added: “Let’s institute reforms at the FBI so that an egomaniac FBI director like James Comey cannot depart from the normal standard procedures that guarantees all Americans equal treatment under the law.”
Gaetz, an attorney, joins a growing chorus of House Republicans who want Mueller to either produce evidence of Trump-Russia collusion or shut down the costly, taxpayer-funded investigation. So far, the Mueller probe has produced no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe has been testifying before Congress this week behind closed doors. Gaetz said McCabe’s testimony should be made public, so Americans can see the truth about the anti-Trump bias of Obama holdovers at the senior levels of the FBI.
The Mueller investigation has come under fire amid epic screw-ups that suggest the special counsel’s team is too partisan to do their jobs properly.
“The senior levels of the FBI have been infected with an intractable bias that seem to favor Hillary Clinton and work against President Trump,” Gaetz said. “The Mueller investigation has been proven to be biased. The American people know it’s biased.”
Earlier this week, reports surfaced that Mueller’s team may have violated the constitutional rights of Trump associates by improperly seizing tens of thousands of emails without their knowledge, many of which were protected by attorney-client privilege.
Last week, jaws dropped amid revelations that senior FBI agent Peter Strzok exchanged thousands of anti-Trump text messages with another Mueller team member: FBI attorney Jill Page, with whom Strzok was having an affair.
But the straw that broke the camel’s back for GOP lawmakers like Matt Gaetz was the revelation that Strzok, his mistress, and Andrew McCabe had discussed how to keep Trump from winning the presidential election and undermining him if he did.
“[Deputy FBI Director] Andrew McCabe was present when the FBI hatched a scheme to deprive Donald Trump of the presidency both before and after his election,” Gaetz said. “That is totally unacceptable, and it poses a clear and present danger to our democracy. That’s why we’ve got to expose the truth…It’s absolutely outrageous.”
