A teacher at an Oklahoma public school was suspended amid complaints she gave students an inappropriate, sexual homework assignment.
“She said, ‘Calculate the friction of two people having sex.’ Apparently she winked,” 8th grader Kaitlyn Graham told Fox 4 News. “That’s not funny.”
There were other complaints that the teacher told her male students to masturbate, then take projectile measurements afterward, Fox 4 News reported. The unnamed teacher has since been suspended.
The teacher gave the assignment to 9th grade science students at Classen SAS (School of Advanced Studies) in Oklahoma City last week. Classen is a public magnet school known for being one of the state’s top academic high schools.
Kaitlyn Graham is an 8th grader who has the teacher for other subjects, but was not in the science class that received the controversial assignment. Graham said her older friends who were present in the class told her what happened.
“A bunch of different people have told different variations of the story,” Graham told Fox 4. “But no matter what it was for, that’s not what I would expect from the school.”
Ashley Buchanan is a parent whose son attends Classen SAS. He was shocked that any teacher would assign such a homework, saying it’s his job as a dad to discuss sensitive topics like masturbation.
“I haven’t gone over stuff like that with my son, and it would be my place to do that,” Buchanan said (see video). “I just couldn’t believe that a teacher would ask that kind of stuff for extra credit.”
A rep for Oklahoma City Public Schools issued the following statement, saying it was investigating the matter:
“On Friday, September 29, 2017, Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) was made aware of allegations against a teacher at Classen SAS indicating she was in violation of the district’s Teacher Conduct policy (G27). These allegations are now being investigated by OKCPS.
As is routine in these situations, the teacher has been placed on Administrative Leave pending that result of our investigation. Because this is a personnel issue, we cannot provide any further comment at this time.”
Graham said she likes that teacher, whom she described as “funny” and “nice,” but she was surprised by the bizarre homework.
“It’s not that big a deal and I don’t think she should get fired, but I definitely think she should get suspended,” Graham said. “She was pretty funny, and she was nice, and I liked her class. But the fact that she said that … I don’t know. I don’t know what to think about it.”
Meanwhile, dad Ashley Buchanan didn’t mince words. “That’s just not something you would say to students in a high school,” he said.
