Trump defends Bernie Sanders over DNC revelations: ‘It’s illegal… and it’s really unfair’

President Trump thinks Bernie Sanders was treated unfairly in the 2016 election campaign.

In fact, he thinks the Democratic National Committee’s handling of Sanders’ candidacy is even “illegal.”

In a wide-ranging interview on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” Thursday, the president spoke about allegations of a Democratic “rigged” primary, reacting to claims by former DNC chairwoman Donna Brazile that the Democratic presidential primary between Hillary Clinton and Sanders was fixed.

“I think it’s like, it’s a major story,” Trump said, questioning whether the mainstream media would pick it up.

“It’s illegal, number one, and it’s really unfair to Bernie Sanders,” Trump said of the Vermont senator.

“I’m not a Bernie Sanders fan, although I must say I got a lot of his votes when he was thrown out. Many of those people voted for me because of trade because I agreed with him on trade,” he continued.

“But that was, I thought that was terrible,” Trump concluded.

Brazile made the bombshell claim Thursday while promoting a new book, saying she had found “proof” that the DNC handed Clinton the nomination. Brazile, who took over as the interim DNC chair in 2016 when Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz was forced out of the position, claimed she discovered a joint fundraising agreement signed four months after Clinton announced her candidacy and about a year before she clinched the nomination.

With focus on the DNC and the Clinton campaign, President Trump earlier spoke about revelations that they had funded the infamous dossier that contained unverified claims about him.

“That dossier, which is totally fake and made up, it’s like a novel,” he said.  “That dossier is a disgrace and it should not have been allowed to be used. And then I hear the kind of money they spent.”

Ingraham informed him that, according to reports, Democrats paid as much as $9 million.

“I mean, it’s inconceivable. It’s absolutely inconceivable – it’s horrible,” Trump said. “I think it’s a disgrace that a thing like that can take place.”
