Three U.S. soldiers who suffered life-changing injuries are expected to provide dramatic testimony at Bowe Bergdahl‘s desertion sentencing.
The judge, Army. Col. Jeffery R. Nance, will consider Bergdahl’s admission of guilt as well as the serious injuries several military members suffered while looking for Bergdahl when he hands down his sentence.
Bergdahl, 31, faces life in prison after admitting he deserted his post in Afghanistan in 2009. Bowe’s unit was worried he had been captured and set out to rescue him. Six soldiers were killed looking for him, and several others were severely injured.
One of those injured was Army National Guard Master Sergeant Mark Allen, who was shot in the head during the search mission. Allen suffered traumatic brain injury and now can no longer talk or walk, the Daily Mail reported.
Another is Army Corporal Jonathan Morita, whose right hand was shattered by a grenade during the rescue mission for Bergdahl. He still can’t bend his thumb or index finger.
Also set to testify at Bowe Bergdahl’s sentencing is Senior Chief Petty Officer James Hatch, whose his leg was hit by AK-47 fire during the search-and-rescue mission.
Unable to testify are the six soldiers who got killed trying to find Bergdahl, but you can be sure their memories will haunt the court room today.
Making matters worse for Bergdahl is his recent statement slamming the U.S. Army for not being more forthright about what his future holds.
“At least the Taliban were honest enough to say, ‘I’m the guy who’s gonna cut your throat,’ ” Bergdahl told the Sunday Times. “Here, it could be the guy I pass in the corridor who’s going to sign the paper that sends me away for life. We may as well go back to kangaroo courts and lynch mobs.”
Bergdahl, 31, has performed “administrative duties” for the past three years while awaiting his desertion trial. Basically, he’s upset that the U.S. Army is nice to his face, unlike his Taliban captors, who beat, starved, and tortured him for five years.
But Bergdahl says the Taliban is better because they’re more “honest” in their hatred of him and all Americans.
Bergdahl was freed in May 2014 as part of a controversial prisoner-exchange deal by the Obama administration where the United States released five Taliban terrorists in exchange for Bergdahl.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, candidate Donald Trump slammed Barack Obama for negotiating with terrorists and releasing five hard-core Taliban soldiers in exchange for an American who willfully deserted his post, endangered his entire unit, and betrayed his country.
