Former Republican Congressman David Jolly is taking a page out of the Democratic Party’s playbook in his criticism of President Donald Trump, saying for the safety of the country, Democrats should have control of Congress.
In a move sure to net future appearances on the anti-Trump networks, Jolly appeared on MSNBC Monday evening and told host Lawrence O’Donnell that Trump is not only “unstable,” but “risky when it comes to matters of national security.”
Giving CNN’s favorite Republican and noted Trump-basher Ana Navarro a run for her money, Jolly said the country “might be better off” if Democrats regain control of the House in 2018.
“We do know that we have a president who very well might put this nation at risk and this Republican Congress has done nothing to check his power,” he said. “Democrats could, and we might be better off as a republic if they take the House in 2018.”
The former Washington lobbyist who parlayed his political connections into a seat representing Florida’s 13th congressional district said he recently spoke with a top Republican in Washington, who agreed with him.
“I personally as a Republican in the past few weeks have wondered, is the republic safer if Democrats take over the House in 2018,” Jolly said. “I raised that issue with a leading Republican in D.C. last week, and the remarkable thing is he had been thinking exactly the same thing.”
Sen. John McCain come to mind?
Jolly, who the Club for Growth once labeled “a big-spending liberal… addicted to big government,” admonished the GOP for not keeping Trump in check.
“This is a president that needs a greater check on his power than Republicans in Congress have offered,” he said.
The liberal host was very pleased, saying he “haven’t heard anything like that from a Republican before now.”
