If Americans wanted to hear President Trump’s plans for tax reform in his speech on Friday, MSNBC was not the place to be.
The network cut away from the president’s roughly 30-minute address to focus instead on criticism of Ivana Trump products being made overseas and to interrogate a member of the House Freedom Caucus.
Viewers over at Fox News Channel and even CNN were able to view the entirety of Trump outlining his blueprint for taxes during a speech to the National Association of Manufacturers in Washington. But just the first seven minutes were shown over at MSNBC.
Trump’s first remarks on bringing manufacturing back to the United States was apparently a cue for cohosts Ali Velshi and Stephanie Ruhle to break away and inform viewers that Ivanka Trump’s company was not intending to move production to the U.S.
“I have to say they’re stunning to hear the president talk about the honor and beauty of American-made craftsmanship,” Ruhle broke in. “Well we have to remind you, both the president and his daughter, and their lifestyle brands, do not make any of their products in the United States.”
Once done trashing the First Daughter, the co-hosts turned their attention to Virginia Rep. Morgan Griffith, choosing not to return to Trump’s live speech.
Instead of providing viewers with the president actually detailing tax cuts and his plan’s framework, MSNBC chose to pepper the House Freedom Caucus member with questions about the plan.
Velshi asked the Republican lawmaker for the “best calculations we can get” about the president’s tax plan, adding: “I understand there’s not a lot of meat on the bones yet.”
Griffith was grilled on whether Trump’s claim that the plan would help the middle class was valid, if an increase in the deficit would result, and whether or not the wealthy would benefit under the plan, among other questions. Apparently, the logic of watching the president address those very questions live in his speech was lost on the network.
MSNBC anchor Andrea Mitchell welcomed the 12 p.m. hour by continuing to avoid the live address by Trump in which he proposed slashing large and small business tax rates, simplifying the tax code and repealing the death tax.
In all, after the first seven minutes the network originally aired of the president’s speech and presenting a few pre-recorded segments, MSNBC never returned to the live event.
