DNC’s Keith Ellison says Kim Jong Un is acting more responsibly than Trump – behold your Democratic Party, America!

What was he thinking? Oh, wait …

Rep. Keith Ellison, the deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee, declared that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is acting more responsibly than President Trump.

Immediately after making the comment, Ellison regretted it and tried to retract his words.

“North Korea is a serious thing,” the Minnesota Democrat said during a question-and-answer session at the progressive Netroots Nation conference in Atlanta on Friday.

“You have this guy making bellicose threats against somebody else who has very little to lose over there,” he said, referring to Trump. “Kim Jong Un, the world always thought he was not a responsible leader; well, he’s acting more responsible than this guy is. And what I’m telling you is once you start seeing missile launches, you’re going to see—the time for cranking up the anti-war machine is right now. So if you don’t want to get caught, deer-in-the-headlights, start calling for diplomacy in North Korea immediately.”

Upon leaving the panel, Ellison sought to do damage control, telling The Washington Post’s Dave Weigel that he wished he had not made the remark.

“That was one of those I wish I’d not said,” Ellison said. “It’s tailor-made for somebody to misuse. I’d say, he’s being incredibly irresponsible, and he’s putting us in a situation where you could have an accidental launch. I mean, his rhetoric might make Kim Jong Un think that he needs to strike first. What we need is someone bringing calm to the situation, not spiking it.”

Though Ellison tried to walk back initially comparing the President of the United States to the unhinged dictator of North Korea, his underlying thoughts seem alarming. Democrats appear to be playing a dangerous game of using the threat of nuclear war as a way to tear down Trump.

The Republican National Committee’s rapid-response director, Michael Ahrens, sent video of Ellison’s remarks to reporters, calling it “insane,” according to The Washington Post.

“With radical beliefs like these, Democrats need to decide whether Keith Ellison deserves to speak for their party going forward,” Ahrens said.

Ahrens was not alone in his criticism, as many reactions on Twitter agreed.
