True meaning of love and devotion: Man feeding his wife ice cream in 98 degree heat melts hearts

At a time when divisive politics are tearing the country apart, it’s nice to be reminded that other things are more important. Like love, family, and life in general.

Just ask Pastor Brent Kelley, whose heartwarming photo of an elderly man feeding his wife ice cream during a heat wave went viral.

Kelley and his family had just come from the pool on a sweltering, 98-degree day in Nashville, Tennessee, when he saw an elderly man gently spooning ice cream for his wife in the parking lot of a Sonic fast-food drive-through.

The wife, who appeared to be in her eighties, looked overwhelmed by the heat and humidity, so the ice cream was probably a welcome relief. Plus, who doesn’t like ice cream?

Pastor Kelley, who preaches at Ignite Ministries in Nashville, was so moved he posted a photo of the couple to his Facebook account, where he wrote:

So today, I took the kids to the pool and we stopped for ice cream on the way home. When I got my ice cream and pulled out, I realized that this elderly man beside me was sitting outside his car door, spoon-feeding his wife ice cream who also looked in her late eighties. He draped a towel over her and slowly fed his bride in the 98 degree temperature. It was a beautiful display of love.

The Facebook post immediately went viral, garnering a staggering 451,000 likes, 61,000 comments, and 325,000 shares in less than two days.

Most of the commenters expressed their admiration for the devotion of this adorable, anonymous couple whose love spotlights what’s truly important in life.

“Awww, we all can only pray to be so lucky,” one woman wrote.

Another chimed in: “The thing to think about is that they are getting viral/famous without even knowing it.”

Still another person wrote: “This is a gift of love that has been forgotten by many and is so good to see and appreciate the true meaning of love and devotion.”

If you look at our vapid, celebrity-centric culture, you might be convinced that love is about getting a massive diamond ring, buying expensive homes, or throwing lavish parties to declare your devotion.

In fact, true love is about the small things, like being supportive and kind. And yes, treating your sweetheart to ice cream on a hot summer day.

Twitter agreed.
