After listening to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer spread the blame for the current state of the Democratic Party, CNN’s Jake Tapper asked if they were following in Hillary Clinton’s doomed footsteps.
Schumer spoke to Tapper about the Party’s image and failure to project a clear message as Democrats unveiled their new economic agenda, “A Better Deal,” in an attempt to re-brand the Party. The New York senator aimed and fired at former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and her blame game in an interview with the Washington Post last weekend.
“When you lose to somebody who has 40 percent popularity, you don’t blame other things — Comey, Russia — you blame yourself,” he told the Post, and then elaborated to Tapper on CNN’s “The Lead” on Monday.
“It’s not just 2016, it’s 2014 as well and the blame goes all around,” he said. “People didn’t know what we stood for.”
Tapper cited a recent Washington Post/ABC poll which concluded that 52 percent of voters believe that the only thing the Democratic Party stands for is “just against Trump,” to which Schumer agreed, saying, “yes.”
“Do you think that your party is currently making the same mistakes Hillary Clinton might have made during the campaign?” Tapper then bluntly asked the senator.
“I’m not going to point any specific fingers. we’re all to blame,” Schumer responded, pointing to the new agenda.
But Tapper pressed the New York lawmaker, asking if he was worried that his party was “too fixated” on the Russia investigation, citing Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine‘s suggestion “that actions by Donald Trump Jr. are potentially treasonous.”
“I don’t know one legal expert who agrees with that,” Tapper said, adding “Are you worried that you’re playing into Donald Trump’s hands in that way?”
Schumer actually disagreed that his party was obsessed with alleged collusion between the Russian government and the Trump campaign, stating they have been focused, instead, on healthcare and their newly announced economic agenda.
