They had to see it coming.
Democrats kicking off a #StandWithNancy hashtag on Twitter Wednesday just wanted to show some support for the House minority leader, but their plan backfired when Republicans joined in.
Virginia Rep. Don Beyer thought the hashtag would be encouraging for Nancy Pelosi in light of the criticism the California congresswoman received following Democrat Jon Ossoff’s loss in Georgia’s special election on Tuesday, the fourth recent special elections loss for Democrats.
.@PRyan is bankrupt of ideas. That’s why GOP would rather attack the first woman speaker who’s delivered her caucus. #StandWithNancy

Others soon picked up on the hashtag and began to tweet their support like Hawaii Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal, and others.
The fact that the Republicans attack Nancy Pelosi so much, shows how good at her job she is. That is why I #StandWithNancy

But it wasn’t long before Republicans caught on and joined the movement, with some encouragement from Fox News Contributor Ryan Fournier.
Hey Republicans, why do you #StandWithNancy — Use the hashtag!
— Ryan Fournier (@RyanAFournier) June 22, 2017
#StandWithNancy cause she lost the House, then Senate, then POTUS to GOP. Plus whole lot of state legislatures and Governors. I love her.
— Puddy (@USAalwaysFirst) June 23, 2017
The hashtag began trending as even groups like the National Republican Congressional Committee and Republican National Committee called for Americans to #StandWithNancy.
We #StandWithNancy because we’re not tired of winning. 4-0!

President Trump was in on the game before the hashtag even started, tweeting earlier on Thursday that he hoped the Dems didn’t ‘force her out‘ before the midterms. On Friday he reiterated the sentiment saying he would be “very disappointed” if the House Democratic leader stepped down.
“It would be a very, very sad day for Republicans if she steps down. I would be very disappointed if she did,” Trump said on “Fox & Friends,” adding that Pelosi has an “extraordinary record against her.”
Pelosi aides had reportedly even sent pre-scripted tweets to allies, according to New York Times’ Maggie Haberman.

Nevertheless, the hashtag persisted – and took on a life of its own on Twitter.
