Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly struggled to hold back tears as he spoke about his son, who died in southern Afghanistan.
Appearing on “Fox & Friends,” Kelly was sharing his thoughts about Memorial Day when he was asked to describe his son, 2nd Lt. Robert Kelly, who was killed in 2010 while leading his platoon on a combat patrol — he stepped on a concealed roadside bomb.
“Finest man I ever knew,” Kelly said, as he began to choke up with emotion.
When asked to expand on the remark as images of his deceased son were displayed on a split screen, tears began to well up, forcing the secretary to pause momentarily.
“Wonderful guy. Wonderful husband. Wonderful son. Wonderful brother,” Kelly finally said as he regained his composure. “Brave beyond all get out. His men still correspond with us. They still mourn him as we do.”
Kelly, a general at the time of his son’s death, is the highest ranking officer to lose a son in this generation, according to host Brian Kilmeade — his older son, John, served two combat tours in Iraq as a Marine captain.
