Mom wants apology from Fox News over her young son’s ‘incident’ with the back of VP Pence’s hand

The quest for an apology appears to run in the family…

A protective mother of a tenacious young boy at the center of a seemingly harmless story involving Vice President Mike Pence is mimicking her son’s behavior, asking for an apology from Fox News for politicizing what was seen as a cute moment.

The kerfuffle is over an incident that took place last Tuesday when the young boy was ever-so-slightly brushed by a backhand to the kisser by the vice president at the end of a speech he gave to military families for National Military Spouse Appreciation Day.

Feeling that he was owed an apology, the boy hounded Pence until he got one.

During an appearance Friday on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” radio talk show host Tammy Bruce called the kid a “snowflake” in need of a safe space, saying he “stalked the vice president.”

Turns out, there’s more to the boy’s story.

His mother, Dr. Ingrid Herrera-Yee, appeared on CNN on Monday to say that her son, Michael, is on the autism spectrum and is a military child. She explained that he has only been verbal for five years and that children with autism need to rehearse and practice social interactions.

“I was devastated when I saw what they were saying,” Herrera-Yee told CNN anchor Jake Tapper. “They didn’t even know his age — they didn’t know who he was.”

In addition to a call for an apology from Fox News, she also had a message for those who might politicize events like this.

“Please don’t use kids,” the mother implored. “Whether they’re typically developing kids — it doesn’t matter that he’s autistic or a military kid. Forget all that. He’s a kid. And you don’t use children as examples on national television like that.”

Update: Guest host Bill Hemmer, spoke to Tammy Bruce who issued this apology to the boy and his family.

Bill Hemmer – A word of apology on a segment we aired on the channel Friday evening. It involved the vice president and a young man at a military event in Washington. Fox news contributor tammy Bruce joins us now. Tammy, good morning.

Tammy Bruce – First, I’m so sorry to the family. My intention was never to hurt a kid and his mom. We had absolutely no idea Michael was on the autism spectrum. And, as a gay woman and feminist I have spent most of my adult life working to improve the lives of women and children and those who are disenfranchised. I get it and I apologize. I also appreciated the boy’s mother – Dr. Herrera-Yee’s – public comments and her clarity on this. A main lesson here, no matter intent, is to leave kids out of our political discussions. We certainly agree on this.

Bill Hemmer: Thank you, Tammy. and to the family involved, thank you for your service.
