She had an ally in the university’s president.
When Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was invited to deliver the commencement address at a historically black Daytona Beach, Florida university, she probably didn’t expect to be booed for the effort.
She barely got the first sentence out at Wednesday’s Bethune-Cookman University ceremony before students began loudly jeering her in an apparent attempt to drown out her message.
Shortly after the protests began, the administrators and faculty members seated behind her rose from their seats in solidarity with DeVos, who supports charter schools and vouchers for school choice.

Two minutes into her address, she acknowledged that there were some who disagreed with her invitation to speak and that she particularly looked forward to addressing them
“One of the hallmarks of higher education and of democracy is the ability to converse with and learn from those with whom we disagree,” she said.

At that point university President Edison O. Jackson approached the microphone to put an end to the nonsense.
“If this behavior continues, your degrees will be mailed to you,” he warned. “Choose which way you want to go.”
Order for the most part was restored, although at least one man was escorted out by security.
