Could Megyn Kelly’s first NBC interview be with Putin? Sources say network is trying to land him

Megyn Kelly’s NBC debut could launch with a news-making interview of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Though still unconfirmed, NBC sources told Page Six that the “biggest get on the planet” could go to the former Fox News anchor.  But the seniority of “Today” show’s Matt Lauer and Lester Holt of the “Nightly News ” could mean they outrank Kelly if the network gets the interview.

NBC News chairman Andy Lack, who has been in Russia this week, is hoping to meet with Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in an effort to score the network an interview with the Russian leader, sources told Page Six.

“Andy Lack has been in Russia having meetings to land an interview with Putin,” one source said.

Lack’s  stop in Russia comes at the end of a tour of NBC’s European bureaus and meetings in France with Euronews, a television network that reaches 277 million households across Europe, Africa and the Middle East. NBC announced in February that it had acquired a 25 percent stake in the network.

Lack will have to overcome any bad feelings lingering with the Russians after he claimed in 2015 that the Russian government-sponsored news channel, RT, was slanting its coverage with the Islamic State’s point of view.

“We see this as an international scandal and demand an explanation,” an “outraged” RT had responded, Page Six reported.

As for Kelly’s NBC debut, staff is being set in place for the launch of her Sunday night network show, expected to air as soon as this summer. Kelly was released from her Fox News contract last week and her morning NBC show will be launching later in the fall.

Though she would probably welcome the chance to kick off her NBC career with an interview with the Russian leader, Kelly may have to take a backseat on this one.

“It is not clear who would do the Putin interview,” the unnamed source told Page Six. “News chiefs decide based on who would be best for the job. This isn’t Megyn’s interview — yet.”
