The Girl Scouts of the USA is now under fire for daring to participate in the inauguration parade. But it’s not the parade that’s the problem, it’s the incoming president.
An online petition is demanding the nonpartisan group drop plans to march in Friday’s parade for President-elect Donald Trump because doing so would violate the values of the Girl Scouts, Fox News reported.
The petition, with over 160,000 signatures, was written to Girl Scouts Interim CEO Sylvia Acevedo by junior troop leader Heather C.
“By marching in Donald Trump’s inaugural parade, you are failing to live up to GSUSA’s values. Please do not make Girl Scouts of the USA party to normalizing racism, misogyny, and fascism. Do not march in the inaugural parade,” the petition read.

The group responded in a statement, clarifying that participation in the parade is completely voluntary.
“Being a leader means having a seat at the leadership table no matter what. It means being willing to work with whomever happens to hold political power,” the statement read. “Advocating for change on issues one cares about isn’t at odds with participating in a century-long tradition that represents the peaceful exchange of power.”

Marching in inauguration parades has been a Girl Scout tradition for 100 years. About 75 Girl Scouts were expected to join Boy Scouts in Friday’s inaugural march.
