Donald Trump’s first tweets as president were sent less an hour after he took the oath of office Friday, and came from his personal @realDonaldTrump account, not the official White House @POTUS account.
It appears Trump will use the same account he tweeted from during the campaign, at least initially, than switch to the account set up by the White House in 2015.
The POTUS account, like WhiteHouse.gov, switched over from the former control of President Barack Obama’s administration to the Trump team. The tweets were likely pre-loaded and posted by Trump’s incoming White House staff, as the new president is still involved with inauguration activities.
Today we are not merely transferring power from one Administration to another, or from one party to another – but we are transferring…

power from Washington, D.C. and giving it back to you, the American People. #InaugurationDay

Trump’s first tweets echoed the populist message from his inaugural address, emphasizing that he intends to put power back into the hands of the people.
What truly matters is not which party controls our government, but whether our government is controlled by the people.

January 20th 2017, will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 20, 2017
Trump tweeted that no Americans will be forgotten.
The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer. From this moment on, it’s going to be #AmericaFirst🇺🇸
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 20, 2017
Trump repeated the maxim that will guide policy making in his administration: Buy American and hire American.
We will bring back our jobs. We will bring back our borders. We will bring back our wealth – and we will bring back our dreams!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 20, 2017
Meanwhile, the @POTUS account remains unused, but has already gained nearly 4 million followers in the hour since the control switched over to Trump’s team.
