President Obama reportedly did not confront Russia about its alleged hacking during the presidential campaign because of optics and over-confidence in a Hillary Clinton victory.

“They thought she was going to win, so they were willing to kick the can down the road,” a U.S. government official told NBC News.
The Obama administration did not respond more forcefully to reports of Russian hacking because they wanted to avoid a potential cyber war with Russia and did not want to appear to be interfering in the U.S. presidential election, according to multiple high-level government officials who spoke to NBC.

An administration official blamed the news media for not focusing more on the Russian operation during the campaign, as the White House did take some action before the Election Day in November.

Obama privately confronted Russian President Vladimir Putin about the hacks at the G-20 summit in China in September and a joint statement from the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence was issued on October 7 addressing Russia’s interference.
President-elect Trump, who has disputed the claim that the hacking source was Russia, criticized the administration in a tweet on Thursday.
If Russia, or some other entity, was hacking, why did the White House wait so long to act? Why did they only complain after Hillary lost?

“I think it is a legitimate question and I think given the stakes at the national level the question deserves an answer,” retired Adm. James Stavridis told NBC. “In retrospect it certainly seems as though it was a mistake not to call the Russians sooner and respond to them in a very forceful way.”

There was plenty of agreement with that sentiment on social media as Twitter users reacted to yet another excuse from Democrats who seem to always deflect responsibility and blame.

@NBCNightlyNews @RedDirtSport That’s rich. So their candidate loses so NOW it’s an issue. Which means it is strictly political.

@NBCNightlyNews But they’re willing to start a cyber war with Russia now that Trump won. Jan 20th can’t come fast enough.

@NBCNightlyNews So, he only cares about Russian hacking if he thinks it will harm Democrats’ electoral chances? The man is brilliant.

Always look for somebody else to blame
