Yes, a Romney was just appointed to big GOP spot, but don’t worry, it’s not Mitt

The GOP has a Romney as its new boss, but it isn’t former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Michigan Republican Party Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel,  niece of the 2012 GOP presidential nominee, has been named as the next head of the Republican National Committee, The Hill reported.

Though her uncle hoped to secure the coveted Secretray of State post, President-elect Donald Trump ultimately did not choose the former Massachusetts governor amid backlash from supporters over Romney’s brutal attacks on the GOP nominee during the campaign.

Trump praised Romney McDaniel, who will be replacing Reince Priebus as he leaves the RNC to become White House chief of staff, calling her a “highly effective leader.”

“I look forward to her serving as the Party’s Chairman in 2017,” Trump said in a statement Wednesday, according to the Hill. “Ronna has been extremely loyal to our movement and her efforts were critical to our tremendous victory in Michigan, and I know she will bring the same passion to the Republican National Committee.”

The Republican National Committee’s 168 members will vote on Romney McDaniel in January making her, if approved, the first female RNC chair since the 1970’s.

“Ronna has been a committed leader in our Party for years, and her leadership this cycle in helping President-elect Trump turn Michigan red for the first time since 1988 makes her an exceptional choice to serve as Deputy Chair,” Priebus said in a statement, according to the Hill.

“Ronna is an outstanding fundraiser, and her ability to drive support for our mission of electing Republicans up and down the ballot gives me full confidence that she will be able to continue building on the RNC’s success and organizational strength as we head into important elections in 2017 and 2018,” he said.

Romney McDaniel will serve with deputy co-chair Bob Paduchik, who led Trump’s campaign in Ohio.

“I am excited to see Ronna McDaniel as RNC Deputy Chair and Bob Paduchik as Deputy Co-Chair,”  Stephen Bannon, Trump’s chief strategist, said in a statement according to the Hill.

“Ronna and Bob were completely committed to President-elect’s Trump’s success in this campaign, and they are going to keep up the enthusiasm for our America First agenda as they fulfill the RNC’s mission of helping our Republican candidates to victory at all levels.”
