A little selective editing by CNN of comments made by Donald Trump suddenly had the GOP nominee calling on his supporters to vote multiple times.
Trump was speaking at a rally Sunday night in Colorado and referenced mail in balloting in that state, but Mediaite noted that CNN selectively edited his remarks in an online article and, upon realizing the mistake, “then tried to stealthily cover it up.”
CNN reported that Trump said:
“If you go to university center, they’ll give you a new ballot, they’ll void your old ballot, in some places they do that four or five times, so by tomorrow, almost everyone will have their new ballots in.”
In reality, Trump actually said:
“If you go to university center, they’ll give you a new ballot, they’ll void your old ballot. They’ll give you a new ballot, and you can go out and make sure it get’s in. Now in some places, they do that four or five times, but we don’t do that. So by tomorrow, almost everyone will have their new ballots in.”
But CNN went even further, assigning a damning headline to the article: “Donald Trump, skeptical of mail-in balloting, encourages voting more than once if necessary.”
The network tweeted the article and it got plenty of play, with 926 re-tweets — CNN eventually deleted the tweet, but the internet is forever:
CNN eventually changed the quote to more accurately reflect what Trump said and explained that “registered voters in Colorado automatically receive a ballot in the mail, but can request a new ballot or vote in person if they have not yet mailed in a completed ballot.”
They also changed the headline, as seen here:

And while the network noted the story “has been corrected,” Mediate pointed out that when first updated at 8:27 p.m. ET, there were no editor’s note acknowledging changes were made. An update at 9:36 p.m. ET, did note that “the story and headline have been corrected.”
