What if all those athletes kneeling during the national anthem were not actually protesting all this time?
MSNBC’s Joy-Ann Reid presented her take on the controversy that began in August when San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick chose not to stand during the “Star Spangled Banner.”
It’s sickening to see people kneel during the national anthem

Why? Kneeling is a sign of supplication to God. it’s done in church every Sunday. It’s a symbol of prayer. Why is that sickening? https://t.co/TK3iYcQr1o

Kaepernick never did mention God in defending his actions, making a statement instead about “bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Reid, however, had her own interpretation of Kaepernick’s move and a distinct idea of how people have “worshipped” the “random” national anthem.
It’s Amazing that people will worship a song, randomly chosen by a president in the 20th century, even over a symbol of submission to God.

Others on Twitter did not buy what Reid was selling.
NFL players aren’t kneeling as a submission to god and you know it. https://t.co/cqF7aCTjSs

@JoyAnnReid come on, really? I completely support Kaepernick’s cause and right to demonstrate, but when did it become about god?
— Don Christy (@DHChristy) October 25, 2016
Reid attempted to fire back but still saw kneeling being only about God and prayer.

@DHChristy is kneeling not about God and prayer? Enlighten me otherwise.
— Joy Reid (@JoyAnnReid) October 25, 2016
@JoyAnnReid I just haven’t heard CK say it was supplication to god, have you? #atheiststhinkblacklivesmatter
— Don Christy (@DHChristy) October 25, 2016
@JoyAnnReid and tbh it’s more powerful as a secular protest, not a religious appeal or reflection
— Don Christy (@DHChristy) October 25, 2016
@JoyAnnReid in other words, civil rights don’t need the badge of religion to be acceptable.
— Don Christy (@DHChristy) October 25, 2016
@redsteeze @JoyAnnReid This is kneeling for God. They’re not kneeling for #BlackLivesMatter or media hyped up BS. pic.twitter.com/Us8we8GAro
