Stifled by a suspect memory.
House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz grilled FBI Director James Comey Wednesday on why the FBI granted immunity to longtime Clinton aide Cheryl Mills, with Comey deferring to the lawyers.
“That’s a question I really can’t answer,” the director said. “That’s between a lawyer and her client, and the Justice Department lawyers.”
Of all the committee members who questioned Comey, Chaffetz seemed to fluster him the most.
But, let’s face it, the guy is a real pro. When backed into a corner, he pulled Clinton-like moves and slipped right out.
“How is this not a conscious effort to alter federal records?” the Congressman bluntly asked Comey, after an IT guy connected to the case was busted on Reddit asking about how to wipe emails. The question literally left Comey speechless.
No worries. He quickly recovered.
Comey also couldn’t answer why the FBI did not interview Clinton’s lawyer, David Kendall, saying, “I don’t remember. I don’t remember that decision.”
Chaffetz asked Comey if he believed a Clinton staffer who said he realized he forgot to delete an archive of Clinton’s emails and went back and did it on his own after the documents were ordered preserved by the House Select Committee on Benghazi and Comey said he had no evidence to “disbelieve” the staffer.
“You really think that he did this by himself? the chairman asked of what is now referred to as the “oh sh*t” moment.
“I never affirmatively believe anybody… except for my wife,” Comey replied.
When asked who gave the original order to have the federal records destroyed, Comey said he could not remember, adding that it may have been Mills or some other Clinton staffer or attorney.
Comey’s suspect memory struck again when Chaffetz asked him to explain why the FBI concluded that Mills and fellow Clinton aide Huma Abedin did not know that the former secretary of state was using a private email server when there was evidence to suggest otherwise.
