An Arkansas parent is calling on McDonald’s to pull a toy from its Happy Meals after a 4-year-old was allegedly burned.
Casey Collyar claimed her son received a burn on his arm after wearing a colorful activity tracker that was included in his McDonald’s Happy Meal.
The Fort Smith mother said her child had on the wrist-worn pedometers for just eight minutes on Saturday, FOX19 NOW reported.
Collyar posted photos of her son wearing the tracker and the burn mark it left on her Facebook page where it was shared nearly 80,000 times.
“I have received approximately eight to nine messages from other parents … all of their children have been burned by the watch, and I received one message from an adult. At this time what angers me is that McDonald’s has not pulled the Happy Meal toy,” Collyar told Fox 19.
According to Fox 19:
The “Step-It” will measure steps and blink lights indicating the child’s activity level. Every Happy Meal sold in the U.S. and Canada will include one of six wrist-worn brightly colored pedometers. McDonald’s said that the toy will be available for four weeks, during which it will advertise the tracker on TV and include it in pre-roll ads on YouTube.
It’s one of the main 2016 Olympic sponsors and is the official restaurant of the games. This toy could encourage younger viewers to be active while U.S. and Canadian athletes compete in Rio.
Collyar was in contact with McDonald’s safety lab, but there was no indication yet if the toy was being pulled from the kids meals.
“We are looking into this matter,” McDonald’s spokeswoman Terri Hickey wrote in an email Wednesday to Fox 19.
“McDonald’s Happy Meal toys, including the Step-it Activity Bands, undergo extensive review and testing by independent safety laboratories and we remain committed to providing our youngest guests with safe and fun Happy Meal toys,” she wrote.
