Drew Barrymore closes a chapter in her life with a truly sad announcement

Actress Drew Barrymore officially filed for divorce from husband Will Kopelman on Friday.

The couple announced their separation in April after getting married in 2012. They have two daughters: Olive, 3; and Frankie, 2.

“Papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court suggest that there will be no messy fights between the two, who were friends for years before they began dating in 2011,” the New York Daily News reported. Court documents say the divorce is uncontested.

Barrymore released a statement to the press when they announced the separation:

“Sadly our family is separating legally, although we do not feel this takes away from us being a family. Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on. Our children are our universe, and we look forward to living the rest of our lives with them as the first priority.”

The actress told Hello! Magazine previously that her life began when her children were born.

“I felt that my life started the day my kids were born and everything I had before was something to be used as wisdom and experience for them, Barrymore said. “It’s like life really wasn’t as important before they were born but you don’t want to have not have existed because it gives you tips along the way.”

She recently had the girls names tattooed on her wrist, posting an image of the new ink along with the caption: “Getting a great little lifetime note on my arm.”

The marriage was Barrymore’s third — her first two lasted less than a year each — and Kopelman’s first.
