Social media star killed by her brother in apparent ‘honor killing’ over these provocative photos

Pakistani social media celebrity Qandeel Baloch was allegedly strangled by a brother in what appears to be an Islamic “honor killing.”

According to police, one of Baloch’s brothers strangled her to death in response to a series of provocative photos and videos she posted on social media as part of what she saw as an effort to change “the typical orthodox mindset” of people in Pakistan, according to the New York Post.

“It’s time to bring a change because the world is changing,” Baloch said recently on Facebook.

That attempt at change would prove to be her undoing.

The Associated Press reported that her parents told police one of her six brothers strangled her to death as she slept in the family’s home in Multan, according to The Associated Press.

“Her father Azeem informed the police that his son Waseem has strangled Qandeel,” Punjab Police spokeswoman Nabeela Ghazanfar said. “Apparently, it is an honor killing but further investigations will reveal the real motives behind this murder.”

Photos Baloch posted included images with a prominent cleric during the holy month of Ramadan that offended many  — according to the Washington Post, the social media sensation said they had soft drinks and cigarettes together during daylight hours when practicing Muslims are expected to fast.

Baloch had 123,000 Instagram followers, although her account appears to have been taken down. Here’s a sampling of the images she had on display there, from the Daily Mail:
