A Donald Trump supporter participating in a NBC News focus group said “times have changed” when it comes to immigration and that the Statue of Liberty should now have a “No Vacancy” sign.
“A lot of other countries have walls, why can’t we?” the man said when asked about building a wall on the southern border.

While others disagreed, the Trump supporter noted that times are different today.
“I mean, yes, we were accepting — you know, show us your weak, your tired, your poor,” the man added. “I think the Statue of Liberty needs to have a ‘no vacancy’ (sign). Hey, put up a wall against Canada, nothing against them but all the money that we spend outside this country helping poor nations, Muslim nations, dumping money into them, millions and millions of dollars.”
And he had his own ideas about how that money can be better spent.
“Put up a wall around this country, educate our youth, put it into our inner cities and just dump all that money into America and people,” he said.
For the record, when the Statue of Liberty opened in 1886, there were an estimated 57.5 million people in the U.S. Today the population stands at 322.7 million and counting — the U.S. admits more than a million LEGAL immigrants annually, in addition to the untold numbers of migrants coming illegally.
Add to the mix that, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there was a record-high average of 24,963,000 foreign-born workers employed in the United States in 2015.
A remarkable statement given America’s long, rich history of welcoming the world’s tired, poor huddled masses yearning to breathe free.
A second Trump supporter on the panel felt that immigration is a problem, though she did not like the idea of a wall.
“I support a limitation on allowing immigration right now,” the woman said. “It’s not just Muslims — it’s immigration, period. I think our country has a significant immigration problem. I agree, I don’t think a wall is the solution, I don’t agree with the wall stance at all.”
