Sen. Lindsey Graham, who has held nothing back in his criticism of Donald Trump, is now reportedly urging conservatives to back the presumptive Republican nominee.
At a private fundraiser in Florida on Saturday, the Republican South Carolina senator allegedly called on GOP donors to unite behind the man he has repeatedly said is not fit to be president, CNN reported.
“He did say that we need to get behind him,” Teresa Dailey, a prominent Florida Republican fundraiser at the event told CNN Sunday.
A spokesman for Graham would not confirm the senator’s comments but clarified that he was not in favor of a third-party run that some Republicans have been trying to organize.
“There hasn’t been any change in his position,” Kevin Bishop said. “He’s been pretty upfront and outspoken.”
Graham shared at the event that he has now spoken to Trump several times discussing foreign policy, Dailey said, though he reiterated that he has no plans to formally endorse the presumptive nominee.
Graham has been one of Trump’s most vocal critics, even warning that a Trump presidency would lead to another 9/11 terror attack. Earlier this month he tweeted “If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed…….and we will deserve it.”
Graham appears to have softened after speaking with Trump by phone this month, according to CNN. It was a “cordial, pleasant phone conversation” discussing national security threats, Graham told CNN.
“My criticism has been wide and it’s been deep, but we did have a good conversation. He asked good questions,” Graham said.
