What started as a congenial interview quickly escalated into a heated exchange as Donald Trump blasted ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.
Trump called out the “Good Morning America” host on Friday after being pressed about releasing his tax returns, noting Stephanopoulos’ relationship with Hillary Clinton.
“She’s got emails missing all over the place! The whole thing’s a scam,” Trump said referring to the ongoing controversy and investigation of then-Secretary of State Clinton’s emails. “I know she’s a good friend of yours, and that you worked for her. Though I know you didn’t reveal it. But there are a lot of emails missing.”
Stephanopoulos, who served as the White House Director of Communications under Bill Clinton, came under fire last year for the conflict of interest in not revealing donations he had made to the Clinton Foundation.
The GMA anchor pressed Trump repeatedly over his taxes, noting that Democratic rival Clinton has challenged him to release the documents. “I have to laugh,” Trump replied. “What about all the missing emails…or her Goldman Sachs speeches,” he said, calling Clinton a “very, very great hypocrite,”
Stephanopoulos asked the presumptive GOP nominee if the American people deserve to see his tax returns prior to making a decision in November.
“I don’t think they do,” Trump fired back, adding that he was undergoing a “routine audit” and would release the returns as soon as that audit is completed.
“I fight very hard to pay as little tax as possible,” Trump noted, explaining that he considers taxes an expense because “this country wastes our money.” When pressed by Stephanopoulos to reveal his tax rate, Trump quickly and bluntly said, “It’s none of your business. You’ll see it when I release.”
