In the furtherance of an apparent new-found skill of being able to ascertain truth from fiction, New York magazine editor John Heilemann questioned whether MSNBC’s Willie Geist attends church, resulting in a rather awkward exchange.
The “Morning Joe” co-anchor was talking about a new assignment on the network, “Sunday Today with Willie Geist,” after a clip was played from his first airing on Sunday.
“I’m usually where you are this time of the week: on the couch in my sweatpants with a cup of coffee, but from now I’ll be here, in my church clothes, spending the morning with you.,” he tells viewers in the clip. “You get to keep your sweatpants on.”
As co-anchors Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski gave him “atta-boys,” Heilemann jumped in with a heavy dose of sarcasm.
“Do you think it was a good idea to start the show off with a lie like that?” he asked Geist.
Geist questioned him on what was the lie.
“Church clothes?” Heilemann replied. “When’s the last time you’ve been to church?”
“John, just because you’re morally bankrupt doesn’t mean the rest of us are,” the MSNBC host fired back, after noting that he was just at church “last week.”
“Last week, huh?” Heilemann comes back, determined to get the last word, “What were you doing there?”
