Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said CIA Director John Brennan’s comment that he would refuse to allow waterboarding was “ridiculous.”
Brennan told NBC News in an interview set to air Monday night that his agency will not use “enhanced interrogation” practices, waterboarding among them, even if ordered to do so by a future president.
“I will not agree to carry out some of these tactics and techniques I’ve heard bandied about, because this institution needs to endure,” Brennan said, according to The Hill.
In an appearance Monday on “Fox & Friends,” the candidate said the U.S. “can’t beat” the Islamic State and pointed to the current strategy in explaining why.
“We have a huge problem with ISIS, which we can’t beat, and the reason we can’t beat them is we won’t use strong tactics,” Trump said. “So I think his comments are ridiculous.”
Trump has previously said that “torture works” and that he would “bring back a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding.”
“Can you imagine these ISIS guys sitting around eating and talking about how our country won’t waterboard after they’ve chopped off 50 heads?” he asked the “Fox & Friends” crew. “We can’t waterboard and we can’t do anything.”
Of course, before battling the CIA, a future President Trump would first have to overturn President Barack Obama’s executive order banning waterboarding, which he considers torture.
The interview can be seen here, with the remarks on waterboarding coming at the 7:30-minute mark:
