Party insiders get priority status; only 50 tickets go to public for GOP debate

The Republican presidential debate in Detroit is creating a large demand for tickets, but only 50 of them will be granted to members of the public.

Out of 400 tickets that the Republican National Committee allotted to the Michigan Republican Party, about 350 will go to elected officials, state committee members and grassroots activists, reported The Detroit News on Tuesday.

A grand total of about 50 tickets will be left to randomly award to the public, out of more than 21,000 requests the state party has received.

“If we have people that are turning them down among our elected officials, then we’ll add that number,” said Michigan GOP spokeswoman Sarah Anderson. “We want to give out as many as we can. We know that people are excited and want to be there.”

Tickets were also being awarded to Michigan members of the Republican National Committee and the presidential candidates themselves, according to the News.

Thursday’s Fox News Channel debate, being held at the historic 5,000-seat Fox Theatre in downtown Detroit, is scheduled to feature GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump, Sen. Marco Rubio, Sen. Ted Cruz, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Detroit native and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson declined to appear.
