Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein reportedly hired security agencies to spy on his sexual harassment accusers and try to put to rest a New York Times story on the allegations, according a New Yorker profile.
Weinstein apparently contracted security agencies like Kroll and the Black Cube, an agency run by officers who used to work for Israeli national security agency Mossad, according to documents read by the New Yorker and various people involved in the scheme.
Weinstein hired the two agencies, along with other Israeli ones, in 2016 to being looking into women who were accusing Weinstein, the New Yorker reports. The firms were hired to gather information on the women making the accusations and the journalists looking into the allegations.
Black Cube was told to help prevent the allegations that appeared in The New York Times and The New Yorker bombshell reports from making it to the public’s eyes. Weinstein also reportedly asked the firms to collect information on the past sexual behavior of those he had them spying on, effectively creating psychological profiles on them.
Eighty women have accused Weinstein of sexual harassment and assault over the years. The stories range from his groping them or allegedly forcing oral sex on them. A representative for Weinstein has denied all allegations of non-consensual sex.
Black Cube neither confirmed nor denied the allegations.
“It is a fiction to suggest that any individuals were targeted or suppressed at any time,” a spokesperson for Weinstein said about the reports of agencies going after individuals.
