Everyone’s so cooperative, suddenly: Jeb Bush jumps in to help president-elect Trump

In the final weeks of his campaign, Donald Trump proposed an idea that would shake Washington to its core – term limits for Congressional members. And now a former Republican opponent and harsh critic has embraced not just this idea, but the momentum behind Trump’s improbable win to remake government to serve the people.

In an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush acknowledged Trump’s “hard-won victory” during which he “tapped into the anger and deep distrust that voters feel toward Washington.”

“Americans, by wide majorities, agree that Washington is broken, so let’s send power back to the people and back to the states,” Bush writes. “Republicans should support convening a constitutional convention to pass term limits, a balanced-budget amendment and restraints on the Commerce Clause, which has given the federal government far more regulatory power than the Founders intended.”

Should Trump somehow manage to guide the passage of term limits through the constitutional convention process, it would indeed be a revolutionary change that would go a long ways towards ‘draining the swamp.’ After all, according to Time, 32 senators and 226 representatives would be immediately out of a job!

While the fact that Hillary Clinton’s popular vote lead shows the country is indeed divided, Bush writes that the Republican Party “has no excuse for failure. We are in charge of both the executive and legislative branches in Washington, and we dominate in the states like never before. We have the power to set the agenda, and we have the responsibility to govern, not merely on behalf of the voters who supported President-elect Trump, but for all Americans.”

Although Bush, contrary to his signed pledge, did not support the Republican nominee, he writes that he is praying for Trump’s success.

“I will continue to pray for President-elect Trump and his family,” Bush wrote. “I pray he governs inclusively, with humility and with purpose. I pray that he will be led by a deep love of this nation and each of its citizens, regardless of background or ZIP Code.”

“And I want him to know that I hope for his success. I hope that he broadens the GOP, works across the aisle and governs with pragmatism and compassion. There are many who did not vote for him who agree that what matters most now is that this nation unites and moves forward together. I will work to support those goals.”
