Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume said Monday that Democrats might shoulder more of the blame than usual if the federal government shuts down.
The government will shut down if lawmakers fail to approve a funding deal before midnight on Sept. 30. Appearing on “Special Report with Bret Baier,” Hume pointed out that past shutdowns typically turned public opinion against Republicans but said the current dynamic could be different.
“Well, Bret, let’s remember a couple of things about this. One is that the government doesn’t fully shut down. Essential functions, as they’re called, remain in action. And the second thing is that the history of this stuff is that when the government shuts down, it’s unpopular, and people blame the Republicans. I’m not sure that’s going to happen in this case,” Hume told host Bret Baier.
Hume said that House Republicans have advanced what he called a “clean bill.”

“Because what Republicans have proposed here is the proverbial clean bill, which is a short-term measure, changes nothing, continues present levels of spending across the board, and gets to the next juncture in all this. Democrats want to add things to it, and that’s usually what causes trouble and ends up being not acceptable to the public,” Hume said.
Democratic lawmakers returned to Washington on Monday, pledging to prevent a shutdown, even as they voted down a GOP-backed Senate bill that would have temporarily funded the government. President Donald Trump met with congressional leaders Monday in a last-ditch attempt to avert a government shutdown, but the talks ended without an agreement.
Democrats held firm on their demands for healthcare concessions, while Republicans pushed for a clean funding extension. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries led Democrats in calling for an estimated $1.5 trillion boost in Obamacare subsidies and Medicaid funding in exchange for their support — a proposal that Republicans rejected.
