Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich warned Republicans on Fox Business Monday that they risk squandering easy opportunities in this year’s gubernatorial races by failing to hammer Democrats on their tax and spending records.
Democratic Virginia gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger and Democratic New Jersey gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill are running for governor in their respective states. In an appearance on “Kudlow,” Gingrich said Republicans are failing to capitalize on easy political attacks, adding that Sherrill and Spanberger supported tax hikes overwhelmingly opposed by voters in their states.
“Every Democrat who voted no was functionally voting for the largest tax increase in American history. But Republicans have to learn how to drive that message,” Gingrich told host Larry Kudlow.
Gingrich said Republicans have not run a single effective ad highlighting that both candidates supported tax hikes opposed by a large majority of voters in their states.

“They have two Democrats from Congress running for governor in New Jersey and Virginia. I don’t know that there’s been a single ad pointing out that both of them were voting to allow taxes to go up by an enormous number and that 84% of people in those two states would oppose them having done that. But also, in a more detailed area, that bill reforms Medicaid by stopping illegal immigrants from taking tax money,” Gingrich said.
The former speaker said that the bill’s Medicaid reforms offered Republicans additional political ammunition.
“It reforms Medicaid by stopping crooks from taking tax money, and it reforms Medicaid by insisting that able-bodied adults should work. Now all three of those are 75 or 80% issues, as we’ve discovered at our America’s New Majority polling project,” Gingrich said. “And you know, Republicans just have to learn how to learn the information and how to use it over and over and over again.”
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) made the same point as they released an internal polling memo in August, saying the One Big Beautiful Bill Act gives Republicans a key advantage in the 2026 fight to keep House control. The memo urged lawmakers to highlight the law’s benefits and attack Democrats for opposing its tax relief provisions and GOP cost-cutting efforts, according to a copy obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
