Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) blasted a “petty” attempt by Democrats to prevent military funeral honors for Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt.
Babbitt was shot and killed by a Capitol Police officer during the Jan. 6, 2021, events at the U.S. Capitol. Her family was informed under former President Joe Biden’s administration that she would not receive military funeral honors “due to the circumstances preceding her death.”
This decision was reversed last month as the Air Force reached out to the family to offer services for the veteran who was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan during her service. But Sen. Ruben Gallego of Arizona sought to block the move, submitting a resolution Wednesday that declared the “rendering of military funeral honors to her would bring discredit upon the Air Force, and she is not eligible for such honors.”
Tuberville blocked the measure.

“This resolution is nothing more than a pathetic attempt to strip away the earned honors of a veteran who deployed seven times during her many years in the United States Air Force. Ashli Babbitt earned these funeral honors through her service to this nation,” Tuberville declared on the Senate floor.
Blasting Gallego’s resolution as “petty,” the Alabama Republican stated it “would serve no other purpose than to punish the Babbitt family.”
“It’s disgraceful, and it’s un-American. In case my colleague is unaware of this, the Constitution still applies even to those you disagree with politically,” he said.

Tuberville noted that Babbitt could not have her military funeral honors stripped, as she was not convicted of a capital crime.
“This is nothing more than political grandstanding,” he said of the Democrat attempt.
Gallego has been vocally protesting the efforts for Babbitt, posting on X earlier this month, “Those honors are for those who defend the Constitution, not traitors.”
