Clip of Anne Hathaway dealing with adoring fans sparks polarizing debate

Let them eat cake! Or… in this case, take pictures – just don’t get too close.

Actress Anne Hathaway has tongues wagging in all directions on social media.  The A-list celeb dressed in fuchsia and looking fabulous was reportedly in Italy last year for the Valentino Fashion Show when she was greeted by a group of eager fans. Understandably, Hathaway needs to be cautious for her safety, and keeping a distance from unvetted strangers is a logical move, but it was something about her delivery that struck a nerve with many social media users.

Extending her hand and repeating a bit of Italian, the actress stressed, “calma” and “amore” to the group. “I can not take photos with everyone. But, I will stand here and wave if you’d like to take a photo.

“I cannot sign. There’s too many of you,” she stressed, “But, I want you to have something. So, if you like, I’ll just wave a little bit,” she said while gracing everyone with a regal gesture. “Thank you for understanding,” she added.

After that, the actress appeared to loosen up a bit and laughed a little while thanking the small audience.

The somewhat awkward exchange went viral when folks debated on whether the actress was acting a bit too haughty, or if she was perhaps a bit unnerved.

Author and political commentator Oli London received thousands of responses when he asked if Hathaway was polite or impolite to her fans.

Many thought the actress was patient and polite:

Oh! But, not everyone agrees…

It most certainly is. It’s also interesting how people can view the same interaction and come away with entirely different takes.

Perhaps some of the best takes are those who wonder why anyone would care either way. Or even want to get a picture of a Hollywood star.

That’s a good question. But, sometimes it’s a nice break to debate the not-so-serious stuff.
