‘Gloves are off’: Republicans fume, Democrats rejoice over political persecution of Trump

Democrats could not contain their giddiness over the indictment of former President Trump, turning the law on its head and officially entering banana republic territory as they continue their witch hunt over a bogus charge, kicking political persecution into high gear.

The indictment was handed down on Thursday by a Manhattan grand jury that was led by Soros-backed District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Democrats were ecstatic over the indictment while Republicans blasted it as a political witch hunt. This announcement makes Trump the first president, current or former, to be indicted. The specific charges are unknown.

“The indictment of a former president is unprecedented. But so too is the unlawful conduct in which Trump has been engaged,” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) gleefully tweeted, barely able to contain himself. “A nation of laws must hold the rich and powerful accountable, even when they hold high office. Especially when they do. To do otherwise is not democracy.”

Schiff is now outraged that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) intends to step in to defend Trump and Governor Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) has vowed that Florida will not extradite the former president. He is in essence stomping his foot in a tantrum and declaring that Trump is not above the Left’s version of the law.

“Trump’s indictment is an affirmation of the principle that no one is above the law. McCarthy’s threat to interfere with the case and DeSantis’ pledge not to extradite Trump would make him a kind of king. If we are a democracy, no one can violate the law with impunity. No one,” he tweeted.

House Financial Services Committee Ranking Member Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) was excited over the prospect of Trump in handcuffs.

“SO Trump finally got indicted! I predicted he would and I predicted that Stormy Daniels would get him! Sometimes justice works!” Waters crowed in a perceived virtual “I told you so,” moment.

Other Democrats attempted to look solemn, repressing their joy over the moment, by parroting that “no one is above the law.”

“There should be no outside political influence, intimidation or interference in the case,” Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) said in a statement. “I encourage both Mr. Trump’s critics and supporters to let the process proceed peacefully and according to the law.”

And, of course, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) had to put her two cents in as well, tweeting, “No one is above the law, and everyone has the right to a trial to prove innocence. Hopefully, the former President will peacefully respect the system, which grants him that right.”

She ignored the fact that he’s innocent until proven guilty.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) promised on Twitter that the New York indictment “is only the beginning of being held accountable for his crimes.”

“Trump attempted to illegally overturn election results in Georgia and worked to incite the insurrection at the Capitol, both in an effort to overthrow our government to advance his fascist cause,” Bowman claimed and then predictably called for Trump to be banned from running for public office again.

Republicans were incensed over the political persecution of Trump which many see as a brazen move to prevent him from running for the presidency in 2024.

Conservative talk radio host Bo Snerdley astutely labeled the move as entering banana republic territory, “You see the way liberals/progressives act. If they don’t get their way they disrupt. If they hate your winning – they will use their political power like a cheap third world- bannana-republic dictator. Remember THIS day when democrats lose the next election.”

McCarthy pledged to “hold Alvin Bragg and his unprecedented abuse of power to account” for “this injustice.”

“Alvin Bragg has irreparably damaged our country in an attempt to interfere in our Presidential election,” he tweeted. “As he routinely frees violent criminals to terrorize the public, he weaponized our sacred system of justice against President Donald Trump.”

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who is the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, simply tweeted, “Outrageous.”

Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), who is the chair of the Senate GOP campaign arm, called the indictment “a political prosecution.”

Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), who is the chair of the Senate GOP Conference, also branded the indictment a “politically-motivated prosecution by a far-left activist.”

“If it was anyone other than President Trump, a case like this would never be brought. Instead of ordering political hit jobs, New York prosecutors should focus on getting violent criminals off the streets,” Barrasso commented in a statement.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) slammed the indictment as a “sham” and accused Democrats of “weaponizing government to attack their political opponents.”

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), who is the chair of the House Republican Conference, called it “unprecedented election interference” and “a dark day for America,” pointing out that it would fuel support for Trump in 2024.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) called for Republicans to fight back, “Our side chants ‘lock her up’ and their side is going to get a mug shot based on a witch hunt. It’s time to change that. Gloves are off.”

She also called for Biden to be impeached.

“It’s Trump derangement,” Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) said Thursday evening, according to The Hill. “It’s an illness of hatred that just — it shouldn’t be in American politics. I don’t feel that way toward anybody.”
