Nicholas Wade, a former New York Times science editor, savaged Dr. Anthony Fauci on Wednesday during a hearing on “Investigating the Origins of COVID-19,” accusing the epidemiologist of attempting to discredit the “lab leak theory” concerning the origins of COVID.

The accusation comes just days after emails surfaced that show the former White House chief medical adviser commissioned a paper early in the pandemic that was intended to disprove the “lab leak theory.”
“Fauci was probably not too pleased to hear that the virus might have escaped from research that his agency had funded,” Wade, who served as an editor for the journals Nature and Science, told the House Select Subcommittee. It should also be noted he wrote a seminal article examining whether COVID had leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China.
He allegedly was referring to experiments that were conducted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China which was provided with funding from the National Institutes of Health and Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Those funds were purportedly routed to the Chinese institution through the New York-based EcoHealth Alliance.
Wade put the blame squarely on Fauci and former NIH Director Francis Collins, saying, “It’s hard to believe that in the twilight of their long careers, they would seriously mishandle an issue as important as the origin of the COVID virus, yet that is what the evidence seems to point to.”

“The national media swallowed the natural origins story unskeptically, and once committed to it, failed to report important contrary evidence,” he charged.
The New York Post reported, “Dr. Kristian Andersen said Fauci and Collins had ‘prompted’ him to write a study to debunk the lab leak theory, according to a Feb. 12, 2020, cover email submitted with an article on the subject to Nature Medicine. The article was published five days later and was cited by Fauci from the White House briefing room two months later — without revealing his own role in its creation.”
During his testimony, Wade pointed to an email sent to Fauci on Jan. 31, 2020, where Andersen warned that the virus had “unusual features” that “(potentially) look engineered.”
Andersen also said in his email that he and others “all find the genome inconsistent with expectations from evolutionary theory.”
Within just a few days, Anderson had “repudiated” his initial position according to Wade.
“Within four days, Andersen in an email on Feb. 4 repudiated, deriding the lab leak as a crackpot theory,” he recounted. “What made him change his mind? No new scientific evidence came to light.”
As the hearing began, the Democratic ranking member on the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-Calif.) accused Wade of harboring racist views that would discredit the committee’s work, according to Fox News.

Ruiz claimed that Wade wrote a book in 2014 that was “applauded by white supremacists.”
“Today’s hearing marks a concerning step down the path of letting extremism get in the way of an inquiry that should be led by science and facts,” he proclaimed.
Ruiz then announced that he had sent a letter to the Republican majority requesting that Wade be removed as a witness for his “discredited, unscientific, and harmful views.”
Wade’s book, “A Troublesome Inheritance: Genes, Race and Human History,” contended that human races are a biological reality and that recent human evolution has led to racial differences in economic and social behavior. Over 130 population geneticists denounced the book when it came out.
“The notion that people of different racial or ethnic groups are more successful or intellectually superior to another because of predisposed genetic makeup is grossly inconsistent with the consensus of scientific and medical scholarship,” Ruiz railed.
“These views are dangerous and have no place in a hearing examining the origin of a pandemic that has disproportionately and overwhelmingly harmed communities of color in the United States,” he raged.
Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) informed Ruiz that the witnesses were announced last week and that it was apparent he had waited to object until the opening of the hearing, according to Fox News.
Then it was Wade’s turn to defend himself.

“I think I should briefly try to respond to the attempt by ranking member Ruiz to discredit my testimony by saying a number of untrue things about the book I wrote ten years ago on the biology of race. This was a determinedly non-racist book,” he stated.
“It has no scientific errors that I am aware of. It has no racist statements, and it stresses the theme of unity that we are all variations on the same human genome. My book was vigorously attacked by obscurantist academics who want everyone else to believe that there is no biological basis to race. And my book was as welcome to them as pictures of the Earth from space are to flat-earthers,” Wade continued.
“I have nothing to be ashamed of in my book. It’s the only place you can now read about what the genome says, about human races. And I hope that Mr. Ruiz if he reads it, will be pleasantly surprised to find that it says none of the things he says it said,” he concluded.
