Florida rapper who sang about killing rival catches murder charge: ‘Wrapped him up in a jail cell’

A Florida rapper named La’Darion Chandler decided to make a music video bragging about offing a rival gang member and, not surprisingly, wound up getting arrested for murder over it.

The murder occurred in December 2022. Sheriff Grady Judd announced on Thursday that Chandler, 19, of Lakeland, has been arrested on multiple charges after he allegedly shot 33-year-old John McGee in the back after getting into an argument with him. According to the sheriff, both were known rival gang members.

McGee was expected to recover from the gunshot but died on Jan. 9 after he reportedly refused to take medication doctors prescribed, according to Fox 13 Tampa Bay.

Judd claimed that the shooting and resultant death were a result of “testosterone overload” after McGee reportedly “mean mugged” Chandler. Before he died, McGee allegedly told deputies he didn’t want Chandler to be arrested so that he could personally take revenge on him, according to FOX 13.

The rapper was taken into custody on Feb. 22 and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after pointing a gun at and threatening another person. After McGee died, Chandler was charged with his death by police. Among the evidence used against him were lyrics from one of Chandler’s own rap songs that contained details of McGee’s death that had not been previously released to the public.

The sheriff made public the song and said that it suggested Chandler has shot someone in the back who was trying to get away from him. The rap video was posted to Chandler’s social media pages.

“Now, first off. Come on, man. You shoot someone else in the back? What kind of coward is that?” Judd said.

“He’s not much of a rapper. My rapper expert says he doesn’t sing well. He doesn’t move well. He’s just a terrible rapper. But, he’s a stupid rapper. He not only makes a rap video about shooting somebody, but he also admits to shooting the guy in the back. ‘I’m a coward rapper, that’s what I am. Watch me shoot the guy in the back,'” the sheriff mocked, adding that Chandler declared he was always armed and would shoot his rivals.

Judd went on to recount that Chandler cried “like a baby that lost his pacifier” when he was charged with first-degree murder.

The gun that was used in the murder has not been found yet. The sheriff is offering a $5,000 reward to anyone who can find it and turn it over to the police.

Anyone who has information on the shooting is urged to contact Heartland Crime Stoppers at 800-226-8477. They can remain anonymous if necessary.

“We want the gun. We want the gun that’s been pushed around. We know it’s been pushed around. We want the gun that killed John McGee,” Judd asserted.

Chandler was evidently already on juvenile probation when he allegedly shot McGee. He has a lengthy rap sheet dating back to when he was 11 years old. It includes seven previous felony arrests and five misdemeanors. Three of those felonies were committed as a juvenile which includes fleeing to elude, grand theft of a motor vehicle, and vehicle burglary, according to authorities. Judd noted that he’s been incarcerated three times before.

“Let the message be loud and clear and all you gang bangers and gangsters and cool dudes and dudettes, understand we ripped this rapper, and he’s in the jail. We unwrapped him from coolness and wrapped him up in a jail cell,” the sheriff quipped before stating that he wants Chandler in jail for the rest of his life.

The Polk County Sheriff sent out a press release announcing that Chandler faces first-degree murder and assault charges. He has also been charged with being a convicted delinquent in possession of a firearm. He is being held in the Polk County Jail with no bond.
