Courageous anti-communist ex-NBA star teases political future

Former NBA star Enes Kanter Freedom, who has taken a strong stance against the communist Chinese and has a $500,000 bounty on his head by the Turkish government, told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo on Thursday that he is considering running for office “when the time is right.”

While he appeared on “Mornings with Maria,” Freedom was asked if he has aspirations to hold a seat in public office after a clip was played showing the Biden administration publicly stating that they believe China has plans to provide lethal aid to Russia.

“Actually, I do. Actually, I do,” Freedom responded. “That’ll be very interesting.”

Bartiromo further asked him if he had plans to run for Congress and when he plans to do so.

“I would, actually,” the Turkish-American basketball star replied, appearing to be making a major political announcement. “When the time is right, and shoutout to whoever’s out there listening. Of course, I would love to.”

“Are you right now making plans to run for public office?” Bartiromo asked him.

“Yes, I do,” Freedom replied.

Then Bartiromo asked if he had started raising money yet for a run.

“Not yet, I haven’t started yet, but I started having conversations with some of my friends and members of Congress,” he answered.

Former CIA officer Mike Baker jokingly asked the freedom activist whether he wants to be the next Secretary of Transportation in a rather blatant dig at current Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, who took 20 days to visit East Palestine, Ohio after a catastrophic train derailment occurred. Freedom laughed at the suggestion.

He also asked the former NBA star if he had any regrets about shifting his focus away from his basketball career.

Freedom told him, “A lot of people actually ask me this question, ‘you’ve lost millions of dollars, you lost your career’ and stuff. But people need to understand this is bigger than myself. This is bigger than me.”

“Whenever I sit down and have a conversation with those Tibetans, Hong Kongers, Taiwanese people – we call them Mongolians and Falun Gong – and whenever I hear what they’re going through, I was like, you know what? This is just bigger than basketball and I cannot just stay silent,” he asserted.

Freedom’s ongoing public excoriation of NBA star LeBron James’ cozy relationship with China is infamous. He has also taken aim at the NBA itself. Immediately after James broke the all-time NBA scoring record, Freedom congratulated him and then hammered the NBA legend for his soft stance on China.

“He calls himself more than an athlete. He calls himself a human rights activist or freedom fighter, so I was just very disappointed in him choosing money and business over his morals, values, and principles,” Freedom said, referring to James’ relationship with the communist regime.

The bounty on his head from Turkey stems from Kanter Freedom’s criticism of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s treatment of citizens there. He was banished from his home country originally over his support for Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish religious cleric living in exile in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. He famously added “Freedom” as his last name after becoming a US citizen in 2021.

Freedom is very outspoken over China’s human rights abuses as well as its stranglehold over Tibet, Hong Kong, and Taiwan’s fight for freedom. He has been very vocal concerning Uyghur Muslims being put in camps and the abuses they suffer there such as torture and rape.
