Deadspin buried in backlash for racist slam comparing ESPN’s Sage Steele to Candace Owens

Deadspin attempted to trash ESPN sportscaster Sage Steele but it backfired on them spectacularly when the media outlet ran with the beyond-dumb headline, “IDIOT OF THE YEAR #6: Sage Steele, the Black Candace Owens,” insinuating somehow that Owens isn’t black.

The sports publication has taken this stance on Steele before, running a piece in July 2020 entitled, “Sage Steele is ESPN’s Candace Owens, and It’s Time For Her To Go.” Evidently, they liked the take so much, they ran with it again and this time it blew up in their face.

This time around, Sage Steele was in good company with those who were anything but idiots. The same cannot be said for Deadspin. She was joined on the list by the likes of Thom Brennaman, Ted Cruz, Rob Manfred, Kyrie Irving, and Urban Meyer. So much for not mixing sports and politics.

Deadspin didn’t even bother attributing the piece to an author. Instead, it took the coward’s way out, labeling it as being from Deadspin staff and caustically led with this hateful bit: “Sage Steele loves three things: pissing off Black people, letting white people play in her hair, and finding ways to outdo herself.”

According to the Daily Caller, a tweet promoting the piece appears to have been deleted, but the racist article is still very much alive and well although “black” has been dropped from the headline. Steele and Owens are both successful black women, but since they are conservative, Deadspin evidently sees them as somehow less so.

Radio host Clay Travis quipped, “Amazing work here.”

Deadspin took special aim at Travis and Steele in their hit job, “First, she teamed up with Clay Travis on Twitter and did the whole ‘well, what about Chicago?’ thing — as they implied that the Black city was more dangerous than COVID-19.”

“Like clockwork, Steele’s racist knight in shining prejudicial armor showed up to defend her,” they savagely asserted.

“’Let’s also keep in mind, guys, she got COVID. Not only did she have to get the Covid vaccine but then she had one of these breakthrough cases of COVID which seem to be occurring at a fairly regular rate,’ said Travis. ‘Dr. Fauci says they don’t track them. I think a lot of people listening now who know someone in their own friend or family circle who had this happen to them. The reality is Jemele Hill, when she was working at ESPN called Donald Trump a white supremacist and nothing happened. ESPN didn’t do anything. Steele is getting suspended for saying she doesn’t think the company should have a vaccine mandate? That’s absolute madness,’” Deadspin reported trying to paint both Travis and Steele as nutcases over standing against the COVID jab.

Conservatives piled on and justifiably so over the ‘oops’ moment.

One commenter named Jason Waldman eviscerated Deadspin over their attack against Steele, “Oh, you mean ‘Zombie Deadspin,’ where every writer can write about one, and only one, topic (ie, Carron J. Phillips only writes about how much he hates white people, Julie DiCaro writes about how much she hates men, etc.)?”

Podcaster Adam Carolla nailed the media outlet on Twitter, “Sage Steele has more talent & intelligence in her little finger than the entire Deadspin staff combined.

Outkick’s Bobby Burack rubbed Deadline’s face in it: “Rough look when you are naming idiots, @Deadspin.”

The host of Blunt Force Truth, Dr. Mark Young, let loose over the incident, writing, “Isn’t @RealCandaceO Candace Owens the actual black Candace Owens?”

And it went on and on as the incident trended on Twitter:
