Liberals initially held out high praise for Las Vegas Raiders defensive lineman Carl Nassib after he came out as the NFL’s one of the first openly gay players on an active roster, but some appear to have changed their minds after he was rumored to be a Republican voter and supporter of former President Donald Trump.
On Monday, Nassib took to Instagram to reveal his sexual preference, which earned him praise from liberal quarters initially. But within a few days, thus-far unsubstantiated reports that he is a Republican who supports the former president surfaced, earning him condemnation and scorn from some of the same people who first hailed his decision to go public.
“I’m proud of and support Carl Nassib for coming out….unless he’s a Trump supporter then that is just problematic,” one Twitter user wrote.
The Blaze reported that Nassib was a registered Republican at least until 2019.
Others hit upon that report as well to criticize the D lineman.
“What Carl Nassib did was great but apparently he is a Republican and huge trump fan which probably does just as much damage to gay people as anything else,” said another Twitter user.
“Just because someone was raised in a conservative family does not mean they get a free pass based on past decisions. Apparently Carl Nassib is a registered republican AND a trump supporter. I don’t care if he’s gay and proud. That administration was evil and he doesn’t get a pass,” said another.
But other users took up for Nassib, pointing out that political preferences shouldn’t take away from anything else he may have accomplished in his personal or professional life.
“Of course, let’s continue to hate each other because we have a different opinion or view on life,” one user wrote in response to criticism of Nassib’s alleged support for Trump.
“Exactly! It’s wonderful that he’s come out, but the second Carl Nassib starts to think for himself he’ll no longer be welcome,” said another user.
“Ah. The tolerant left who hate America,” said another.
One user pointed out that Nassib is not the first NFL player to openly declare he is gay; former St. Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Michael Sam came out in 2014 after he was first drafted. Sam, however, did not make it far in the league, which some suggested was due to his being black.
“Carl Nassib is proof that the NFL was waiting for a white gay to come out . . . @MichaelSam52 Came out and was black listed from the NFL but Nassib comes out and ole boy is a hero? GTFOH. plus he’s a trump supporter so im not gonna praise or support a white republican,” said one user.
Sam took to social media himself this week after Nassib’s Instagram post to thank him “for owning your truth and especially your donation to the Trevor Project,” an organization that provides suicide prevention services for LGBTQ youth.
“LBGTQ+ people are more likely to commit suicide than heterosexuals,” Sam added. “I hope and pray people will take note to this. Thank you again Carl and look forward to seeing you play on the field.”
Others reacted in what many perceived as a tasteless manner, such as “The View” co-host Joy Behar.
“You know, Ana, after they said penetration in the end zone, they lose me,” Behar quipped to co-host Ana Navarro.
