CNN on Friday appeared to downplay a hugely disappointing jobs report that included an uptick in the nation’s unemployment rate to focus instead on a “headache” regarding the White House lawn that was allegedly caused by the former Trump administration.
The Labor Department reported shocking job figures, noting that the economy only created 266,000 jobs after economists predicted that at least 1 million would be created as the country rapidly reopens amid the receding COVID-19 pandemic.
But, as Fox News reported, one of CNN’s lead stories Friday afternoon on its website “was the White House drama over how the Trump presidency kept the lawn.”
Under the headline, “The ‘headache’ Trump left behind for Biden on the White House lawn,” CNN lamented that the prior administration lagged on “paramount” upgrades that were apparently needed on the property at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
“They didn’t want the noise and, Melania Trump in particular, wanted to avoid disrupting the aesthetics on the back lawn, where there could perhaps be events,” CNN reported. “The first couple decided to ‘pass it to the next guy,’ said one of the people familiar with the details. That next guy ended up being President Joe Biden.”
Fox News also included a screengrab of CNN’s home page:
In the story, the network grumbled that Biden “has had to meet his helicopter, Marine One, on the Ellipse, the park below the South Lawn perimeter of the White House and just north of Constitution Avenue” because of new construction occurring on the White House lawn.
Additionally, the report complained that Biden “has had to motorcade approximately two minutes from the White House to the Ellipse to depart and arrive, where before he could ostensibly walk out his back door a few hundred yards and board his private transport.”
The story also quoted a Secret Service source who allegedly said: “It’s been a headache.”
Other headlines captured in the screengrab include what some would argue are outright falsehoods, such as “Republicans continue their nationwide campaign to restrict voting” as well as stories promoting embattled GOP Rep. Liz Cheney’s ongoing conflict with former President Donald Trump and his supporters in Congress.
Fox News noted that a story about the dismal jobs report was visible on the CNN website under “Trending” stories but noted that users would have to click on it to find out the disappointing and highly unexpected details.
The jobs report led to renewed criticism by Republicans of Biden’s handling of the economy in the few months he’s been in office. Not only did the number of new jobs come in far below expectations, but overall unemployment went up, rising from 6 to 6.1 percent even as employers around the country are scrambling to find workers and are offering massive pay increases in some instances.
Republicans have honed in on the recently passed $1.9 trillion COVID relief measure which extended $300 in enhanced federal unemployment payments through Sept. 6. They argue that the extra federal benefit, when combined with what many states are paying, is enough to discourage millions of Americans from going back to work.
In addition to the labor market being out of balance, critics of the administration also noted that inflationary pressures are rising throughout the economy as prices for commodities such as gasoline, lumber, food, automobiles, and houses have increased dramatically since January.
