Second-graders at a Connecticut elementary school were shown a cartoon video on sexual abuse that depicted a male adult with an erection standing over a “sad” girl during a “lesson on social and emotional learning.”
The students viewed the erection in the sexually graphic video for approximately nine seconds. It is entitled: “Alfred Jr. & Shadow: A Short Story About Being Scared” and is nearly ten minutes long. It was aired in a virtual classroom.
The video features two cartoon owls who discuss traumatic experiences that include “stuff that’s very difficult to talk about.” These subjects are usually discussed in the therapy of abused children, not classrooms.
The most disturbing part of the video is when it cuts to a silhouetted man who is standing over a sad-looking child. Then it gets graphic as the moderator explains that: “Some children are afraid that their mom and dad will beat them, or that their parents will fight. Other children have experienced an adult touching or putting their penis in the child’s private parts or mouth.” It’s explained that they are “terrified that this will happen again.” The video alludes to parents taking drugs or alcohol, or who are being abusive.

The video’s summation states, “All children are normalscared, but what do children who are embarrassedscared or painfulscared need?”
The lesson contends that the video is an educational film for children between the ages of 6-14 years. According to Greenwich Free Press: “The children learn about different ways of being scared, what they need when they are scared, and suggestions for actions. Adults also get some tips on how to meet a child who is scared.”
“In my hometown, in my daughter’s age group class of second grade, they showed an animated video today of a man with an ERECTION standing over a child!!!!!” Carl Higbie, who is a parent of a second-grader at the school, angrily tweeted after he found out that the video was played for very young students who are 7 or 8-years-old. He added: “This is not OK!!!!”
“That somebody thought this video was acceptable for second graders was abhorrent,” Higbie added showing his disgust. He is demanding a full investigation into the matter and he wants the teachers that were involved fired. Higbie is a conservative political commentator.

Fortunately, Higbie’s daughter did not see the video. But others were not so lucky and reached out to him to vent their anger over the incident. “These folks have no business teaching our kids,” Higbie said.
He also stated that the teachers who played the video either “didn’t care enough to review this before playing it” or “thought it was OK.”
Greenwich Schools Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones emailed concerned parents on Monday and tried to smooth things over by saying it was unfortunate and that in reality, the video was probably intended for private therapy for sexually abused students.
“The content at this point in the video was not appropriate for our [Greenwich Public Schools] second-grade classrooms,” Jones defensively declared.
So far, the school allegedly has not taken any action to investigate the matter or to dole out disciplinary action for the teachers, Ms. Goodwin and Ms. Hanzlik, who played the video.
