‘Obama 2.0’: Arizona sheriff warns border situation already grim with immigrants emboldened by Biden

Arizona’s Pinal County Chief Deputy Matthew Thomas is making a point of being vocal and sounding the alarm bells on how the border is already getting worse under President Biden. His county is about an hour and a half from the southwest border and they are seeing an alarming uptick in foot traffic, claiming that smugglers are making their way through the county as they head north.

Telltale signs that illegal immigrants have trekked through the area include full black water jugs that were stashed in the brush near a set of fresh footprints. This indicates it is a resupply point and is hidden from view by brush and trash left behind by those hoofing it through the desert. Thomas shared in an interview with Townhall.com that when they had found the resupply point, they had missed the illegal immigrants by only a couple of hours.

Thomas and other officers are now finding themselves once again on the frontlines of a battle with ever-increasing numbers of illegal aliens trying to enter the United States and then disappear off the radar. President Biden wasted no time in signing executive orders to reverse Trump’s immigration policies, in effect re-opening the floodgates just as Obama did.

Even before Biden had taken office, Thomas said he noticed an increase in traffic during the late fall of 2020 claiming the cartels knew what to expect with the new administration and had lost all fear that they would face any repercussions for what they were doing. Thomas calls this the “Obama 2.0” effect.

“When [Trump] took office, we saw that this area out here went completely dead. Nobody was moving, nobody was smuggling because [the cartels] knew that Trump was going to put all hands on deck out down here and that they would be intercepted so it came to a screeching halt,” Thomas told Townhall. “It was a very slow trickle to get back to some kind of normal but it never got back to where it was.”

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office noted a dramatic decline in human trafficking in the early 2010s as cartels primarily focused on the drug trade. As marijuana was legalized, the cartels took a hit financially, so they went to hard drugs which became more profitable. Pinal officials claim human trafficking is already making a comeback along with drug runs under the new administration, Townhall reported.

Biden has ordered the construction of the new border wall to be halted immediately. It was one of the very first things he did when he took office. Now, in the areas where there is no wall, it has created a funnel that leads directly into Thomas’ county. The Sinaloa Cartel is taking advantage of the wide-open, unprotected desert to get to I-8 to keep the flow of drugs and people going.

“For us, effectively, I-8… becomes the new border and even the cartels will tell you that’s their goal line because once they get there, they’re shooting west or they’re shooting east and then they’re on a main interstate right into downtown Phoniex… we become the kickoff point for that,” stated Thomas.

Thomas also warned that drugs and illegal immigrants are getting past them simply because they don’t have enough manpower.

“These people and these drugs are not coming here to Pinal County to stay. This is a transport location. This is a spot they get through to get to their final destination and they’re being sent all over the country,” Thomas bluntly stated.
