MSNBC host Chris Hayes took an unexpected turn against former national security adviser John Bolton over the release of his new book which even had Rep. Adam Schiff seeing red.
Schiff declared that Bolton “may be an author, but he’s no patriot,” as Hayes blasted the “morally odious” Bolton during his show Wednesday, joining a chorus of voices condemning him for his tell-all book.
The House Intelligence Committee chairman, who subpoenaed Bolton during the House impeachment hearings, blasted the former diplomat in a tweet Wednesday, reacting to excerpts from the book, “The Room Where It Happened,” which claimed that House Democrats committed “impeachment malpractice.”
“Bolton’s staff were asked to testify before the House to Trump’s abuses, and did. They had a lot to lose and showed real courage,” Schiff tweeted. “When Bolton was asked, he refused, and said he’d sue if subpoenaed. Instead, he saved it for a book.”

Hayes also slammed Bolton for not coming forward with his allegations but saving them all for a tell-all book and his obvious attempt to negatively target President Donald Trump.
“You know, people talk about how the Republican Party has become the party of Donald Trump. But I think really it’s the party of John Bolton,” the “All In” host said before unloading a string of scathing adjectives to describe the former diplomat who was ousted last September after clashing with the president on some foreign policy issues.
“More than anyone, Bolton is a perfectly representative figure of the modern Republican party and in the conservative movement,” Hayes continued.
“He served in prominent positions in the last two Republican administrations. He’s a vicious bureaucratic infighter. He’s duplicitous, untrustworthy, extremely militaristic. He’s never been held accountable for all the terrible things he’s done in his long public career, and there are many,” the MSNBC host continued.
“He is a completely morally odious individual you would not want in your organization or anywhere around you, and yet he is of course also a Fox News contributor and at the highest levels of the Republican policy-making. Because that’s the way the Republican party and the conservative movement are now,” he claimed.
“Maybe you’ll remember that Bolton was one of the people that broke up the White House pandemic response unit. He also advocated strenuously for a totally unjustified war in Iraq that killed hundreds of thousands of people,” Hayes recalled. “John Bolton could spend the rest of his life, like Lady Macbeth, trying to wash the blood off his hands and it would be there still.”
Hayes slammed Bolton for his refusal to testify during the House’s impeachment inquiry, despite claiming all the inside information he has shared since his $2 million book deal. Bolton had stated that he would testify during the Senate’s impeachment trial if he was subpoenaed, but that call was never made.
“But rather than answer the call to testify about what he knew under oath in front of the House and the American people, in the midst of an impeachment proceeding, Bolton fought against testifying. Instead, he shared his thoughts in a private speech to some rich bankers who paid him for it,” Hayes noted.
“And now, Bolton is attempting to literally cash in on betrayal of his country,” he said. “Again, all of which is par for the course for the modern Republican Party.”
The condemnation of Bolton has come from all sides, with Trump calling him out as a “disgruntled boring fool who only wanted to go to war.”

Schiff again called out Bolton Wednesday night on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show.”
“After they voted to be the first impeachment trial in history without witnesses, we did approach John Bolton’s counsel, asked if Mr. Bolton would be willing to submit an affidavit under oath describing what he observed in terms of the president’s Ukraine misconduct, and he refused,” the California Democrat said.
He told CBS’s Gayle King Thursday that the previous concerns Bolton had during the impeachment hearings “gave way to a $2 million book offer.”

During the MSNBC segment, Hayes went on to cover some of the allegations in the book which are clearly aimed at making Trump look bad, pointing to how Bolton alleged that the president asked China for help with his reelection and that he condoned Chinese President Xi Jinping’s concentration camps, allegedly telling him it was “the right thing to do.”
“Wow, guess what. Donald Trump is exactly as terrible as we thought he was,” Hayes said. “And John Bolton is exactly who we thought he was as well. Because he didn’t say anything about any of this when it happened. He was sitting there the whole time, all of these horrible things he just made $2 million off of.”
Everyone at Simon and Schuster that collaborated in profiting off of this betrayal should be ashamed.

“Instead, what he did was he lobbied for over a year to get a position in the administration and then he immediately started working on a book that he could sell instead of telling the American people that they were in grave danger because the country was being run by an immoral brute.”
MSNBC colleague Joy Reid applauded the take from Hayes, tweeting, “well said.”
So @chrislhayes just said every single thing I feel about the odious John Bolton, who kept all of this horrifying information from the American people until he got paid for it, and whose book I would no more purchase than I would a vial of the bubonic plague. Well said, Chris. https://t.co/bMFYkvCx9I
