Wall Street Journal columnist Jason Riley says the race riots in Democrat-run cities following George Floyd’s death are based on a lie — gleefully fomented by the left-wing media — that “racist” white cops are hunting black men.
In reality, Riley said this is a false narrative that is not supported by statistics or facts.
But because of the sloppy “blanket media coverage” of these racially-charged incidents — and the over-the-top amplification they get on social media — Americans are being brainwashed into believing they happen all the time.
Riley said he’s shocked by the nationwide riots because there is “universal disdain” for what dirty cop Derek Chauvin did to George Floyd. No one condones what he did.
Yet rioters are burning down cities, looting stores, and engaging in group beatdowns of random white people as if there’s widespread approval of Chauvin’s actions.
“A lot people out there protesting are doing so because they’re convinced that this happens all the time to black people every day — that we walk around in fear of law enforcement treating us like this,” Riley told Fox News anchor Bret Baier. “I don’t think what I saw is representative of either police behavior or what black people go through on a daily basis.”

Riley said the media promote the false narrative that there has been a spike in racially-charged incidents involving the police because any time this happens, the press obsessively covers it and hypes it around-the-clock.
“[There’s] blanket media coverage when they happen because of social media, but this does not mean that this is happening more often,” Riley underscored. “Those two things are not distinguished in much of the coverage, and I find that very disturbing.”
Riley pointed out: “From all the data we have, police use of force has actually gone down considerably since the early 1970’s. So these events happen less frequently. And yet, because when they do happen they get more attention, people have the opposite impression.”
Riley said the media’s overhyped coverage of these racially charged incidents will actually result in MORE BLACK DEATHS.
Why? Because the police will stop patrolling black neighborhoods over fears of being called racist. And this pullback will result in these neighborhoods becoming overrun with criminals who will feel free to rob and murder law-abiding residents.
“My concern is that there’s going to be a pullback on the part of police in some of these communities in the aftermath of events like this,” Riley said. “Then these communities will not get the policing that they need and deserve going forward. And then you’ll see more black lives lost as a result.”
Jason Riley is the author of the book “Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed.” The book details how the Left’s patronizing bigotry of low expectations for black Americans hampers their ability to succeed.
Riley says well-intentioned welfare programs are holding black Americans back by enabling their dependence on the government.
Similarly, Riley says affirmative-action programs that lower standards for black students often backfire when they struggle after being admitted to elite universities and sometimes don’t graduate. Same with soft-on-crime laws, which Riley says “makes black neighborhoods more dangerous.”
The media have aggressively pushed the narrative that racist white cops are out there hunting down black men every day. In reality, police kill more white men than black men in any given year.
Percentage of people killed by police officers annually:
Whites: 55%
Blacks: 27%
Hispanic: 19%Can anyone provide me the name of even ONE hispanic or white person that was killed by a police officer this year?

For every 10,000 black people arrested for violent crime, 3 are killed
For every 10,000 white people arrested for violent crime, 4 are killed
I'm going to keep tweeting this until someone can explain to me how this is possible if there is truly pervasive racial bias in policing

In fact, a 2019 nationwide study conducted by Michigan State University and the University of Maryland concludes: “We find no evidence of anti-Black or anti-Hispanic disparities across shootings. White officers are not more likely to shoot minority civilians than non-White officers.”
Joseph Cesario is the study’s co-author and a professor of psychology at Michigan State University. He said: “There are so many examples of people saying that when black citizens are shot by police, it’s white officers shooting them. In fact, our findings show no support that black citizens are more likely to be shot by white officers.”
Cesario added: “We found that the race of the officer doesn’t matter when it comes to predicting whether black or white citizens are shot. If anything, black citizens are more likely to have been shot by black officers.”
